Stockholm. 20 percent of the population of Sweden is living in the county of Stockholm. The county has approx. 2 million inhabitants and the population center approx. 1.3 million inhabitants of which approx. 800 000 are living in the inner city. The inner city of Stockholm is situated on a number of islands and peninsulas.

 

Language. The main language as well in Sweden is Swedish. A large part of the population also has knowledge of English.

 

Name. The meaning of the word "Stockholm" most likely originates from stocks which were used as defences. An alternative interpretation is that the word "Stockholm" means "a collection of holmes".

 

History. The city was originating during the period 1260-1280 and the name "Stockholm" was mentioned in writing for the first time 1252. Stockholm was mentioned as the capital of Sweden for the first time 1436.

 

World-leading. Statistics from the UN:s The World Tourism Organization, indicates that the tourism in Sweden is world-leading and that Stockholm is the main attraction of the country. The qualities of Stockholm are considerated to be the modern design, the vicinity to water and the beautiful nature.

 

Right of common. Sweden has a "right of common"  (allemansrätt) which gives everyone the opportunity to be freely in the nature.

 

Green city. Stockholm is a green city. The county has more than 200 national parks, from which the closest one is situated only 10 minutes with the subway from Stockholm City. A good 40 percent of the land in Stockholm consists of parks and green areas. There are large rambling areas, promenades along the sea as well as small district parks.

 

Clean city. Stockholm has a very clean environment, one of the cleanest in Europe. The air is among the cleanest you can find among the cities in Europe, and the water is so clean that you are able to fish and swim in the city center.

 

Metropolitan life. In Stockholm there are more than 1 000 restaurants, and among these several with stars in Guide Michelin. As the largest city in Scandinavia Stockholm has a great number of bars, pubs and nightclubs. The largest entertainment districts are situated around "Stureplan" and "Götgatan".
